Christians Are Being Mind Manipulated Dr. Yolie Thomas INTRODUCTION The human mind is the source of all behavior. It is a complex unit that stores memory, develops intelligence and encourages inquisitiveness. Although there are many more facets to this incredible function locked within the brain or cerebrum, without naming them all, it is quite evident that it represents the center of man’s thinking. With that said, the mind is the most sensitive part of the body and it is the most sought after by manipulating forces. If the thought life of a Christian can be controlled or manipulated, chances are the entire Christian (mind, body and spirit) will be controlled as well.
Many ask, what is mind manipulation, where does it come from and how are humans affected by it? With unfortunate numbers, many Christians are affected by mind manipulation and are presently suffering from it spiritually. This study will attempt to answer these intriguing questions with viable answers that will articulate truth. There are many types of manipulating techniques used to achieve exactly what manipulators want; some of these techniques are integrated into this investigation for your own personal study. Many Christians are unaware that they have been under the influence of some sort of mind manipulating scheme or mind controlling effort. Some will even deny that they can and have been affected. However, this study will expose that most Christians, if not all Christians have been under a manipulating inducement that has caused them to purchase a product, celebrate a holiday or alter their thoughts toward someone or something. In actuality, a great number of Christians are still under the influence of mindcontrol and are unaware that they are being deceived. People who are under some sort of mind manipulation would deny that they are being deceived and believe that they are acting under their freewill. Are you one of the many Christians who are being manipulated into participating in activities contrary to the Word of God? This study is to prove that Believers are being mind manipulated through falsehoods and pagan practices orchestrated by Satan that go against Biblical importunities.
In reading +Christians Are Being Mind Manipulated” you will discover that the mind and the heart are both connected with the spirit. Revealing why it is so important to guard your heart with all diligence and feed your mind with positive information. You will gain a clearer understanding of what is mind manipulation and how it truly affects us all with thorough explanations of techniques that are used by advertisers and propagandists. Barriers and boundaries are detailed, so to expose the process of crossing them to achieve manipulation. A very interesting review of mind manipulation since creation will explain who Satan is and how he operates in the world and his affects on Christians. It will cover Satan’s influences on Biblical characters in assisting in their rise and fall. In addition, the roots of paganism are illustrated along with its survival after thousands of years.
One of the most important sections of this study is knowing what God expects of a Christian. It provides guidelines and standards that confirms what a Christian is and what are the attributes of being a Christian. Knowing what God expects provides the Believer with exact tools to be great examples of godliness. Another very important section shares what God hates and why as Christians we should hate them as well. This shed light on practices and acceptances by the world, Believers should not buy into. Methods of desensitization are used in repeated exposure of immorality through television programs and commercials. Repeated lies are being told to convince Christians that those things that are right are now to be perceive as wrong and what is wrong should be accepted, by shifting values. In addition, untruths about Christian holidays, that are not Christian at all, are explained in great detail, with origins and history to support these amazing findings.
This prolific study closes with profound resolution to overcoming mind manipulation. It provides spiritual strategies in combating against deceitful predators. By teaching the differences between human and divine viewpoints, a Believer is able to make a sound decision to whether to follow human viewpoints, which can cause harm, failure and disappointment for a Christian, or to pursue divine viewpoints, which guarantees success. Also, Biblical reinforcements are woven into this study to emphasize the importance of Biblical precepts and how a Christian’s mind must always be on the Word of God. Finally, instructions are given unfolding the process of transforming one’s mind to mirror the Mind of Christ. Yolie Thomas Lesson 1 Mind Manipulation The Mind Is Connected To the Spirit Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is (Romans 8:27) What is Mind Manipulation and where does it come from? Is perhaps a question many have asked and wondered if they can be affected by it? Actually, many Christians are affected by mind manipulation and are presently suffering from it spiritually. There are many types of manipulating techniques and ways a manipulator uses to achieve exactly what s/he wants. Many Christians are unaware that they have been under the influence of some sort of mind manipulating scheme or some form of mind controlling effort. Some will even deny that they can and have been affected. However, this study will reveal that most Christians, if not all Christians have been under a manipulating spell that has caused them to purchase a product, either celebrate a holiday or feel a certain way about something or someone. A great number of Christians are still under the influence of mind control and are unaware that they are being deceived. In fact, most people who are under some sort of mind control would deny that they are being manipulated and believe that they are acting under their freewill. However, they mimic and mirror their manipulator. Most of the time, these techniques are done cleverly, gradually and absolutely deceitfully. The mind is connected to the spirit. Many people fail to believe or even understand this truth. Interestingly enough, even though the mind is housed in the brain, if the brain fails to function, meaning as “brain dead” the mind is still intact: how? Allan Turner (1998) explains it this way “…the brain is a part of man’s physical body that is used by his spiritual nature. …The physical brain is not the mind of man. The mind is totally spirit and is linked or correlated with the brain only while man is physically alive. How do we know this? The Bible tells us so. In Luke 16:19-31, the Lord teaches that individuals without fleshy bodies continue to exist after physical life has ceased…” (p. 7) Therefore, the mind and the controlling of it profoundly connect with spiritual life, so much so, that mind-related scriptures are found throughout the Bible. Scriptures like “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind stayed on thee:” (Isaiah 26:3) and “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” (Philippians 2:5) that not only encourage the people of God but give indication that the mind can be controlled, depending upon what it focuses on the most. The mind connects to the heart also, which extends the list of mind-related issues that can be located in the Bible. We see this clearly in Proverbs 23:7a, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:” and in Matthew 12:34b “for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” The mind is the ultimate source of all behavior; it is the center of human being. This complex machine operates inseparably with the human soul and the spirit. The mind is also powerful, but very vulnerable and susceptible to those things it cannot resist. This means that if anyone can break into the human mind, then they can successfully manipulate or control the entire body. Many perfected techniques have been formulated to control the mind in order to control people. These techniques are generally used and created by the secular world; empowered by Satan. Satan is a great deceiver. His efforts are always directed towards the mind of a Christian. If he can cause doubt, fear, guilt or any other negative emotion in a Believer’s mind, his chances of mind manipulation become extraordinarily great. Look at Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden in Genesis Chapter 3. Eve was beguiled by the serpent’s craftiness to the point of mind control. Eve knew not to eat from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil,” but something went wrong. The serpent lied! He assured Eve that she would not die if she ate the fruit, in fact he guaranteed her that she would become just like God. This was too good too be true to Eve and so she ate the fruit, and the taste was out of this world. Generous Eve passed the tasty produce to her husband Adam to share in the delicacy of death, which propelled mankind into pain, suffering and separation.
What Is Mind Manipulation? “useless wrangling of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.” (1st Timothy 6:5, NKJV) Mind Manipulation is the intention of controlling others’ behavior in a way that will persuade them to buy a particular product, alter the way they think, change the way they perform and even influence their style of clothing. Another word that so thoroughly defines mind manipulation is Propaganda; which is the spreading of ideas or information to promote a cause or damage another. “Contrived Propaganda” is the type of propaganda we know as advertisement: informative and manipulative (Philip, 014, pp.1-2). Propaganda is a persuasive technique that entices consumers to purchase, support or reject a product or a person. Propaganda fused with mind manipulation can be detrimental. There are seducing techniques designed to lure people into believing, buying or spreading what the propagandist or advertiser suggests. Many occults, cults and so call religions use these techniques to control their followers. These techniques are subtle and unrecognizable to people as mind-altering forces. There are countless techniques used to control and manipulate the mind, with many that have common characteristics. Johnson C. Philip (014), a Christian Apologist and a Dean at Indus School of Apologetics and Theology, gives eight categories by which the techniques stem from in his book, Analysis of Propaganda Techniques. Only six of these manipulative propaganda methods use to propagate ideas and control the mind will be discussed in this chapter and the others will be elaborated on in chapter 5. Since many Christians and people in general have a fear of their names being drug through the mud, most will do almost anything to protect it. For this reason, propagandists implement the “Fear of Bad Name” technique on the unsuspected that cringe at the notion of being associated with anything or any body with a poor reputation. The Fear of Bad Name technique is the use of negative language to arouse fear in their audiences. This powerful technique focuses on words like outdated, narrow-minded and several others that will stigmatize one’s reputation (Philip, 014, pp.2-3). Unfortunately, this technique has been successfully effective among Christians. How many Christians do you know who will not step a single foot in a dilapidated ghetto where a starving family lives to bring them groceries, out of sheer fear that someone from their so called elite society may see them? Or how about the fact that there are members in Christianchurches (mainly those in positions) causing schisms and spiritual-gifted divisions because of there “I’m too holy,” “too gifted,” or “too prosperous” attitudes toward the spiritually immature or laypersons in general. They dare not associate with them outside of ministry with the fear of being considered common, ordinary or just plain human; forgetting this simple truth: “for there is no respect of persons with God” (Romans 2:11). Quite naturally, there is a flipside to the Fear of Bad Name technique and that is the “Appeal of Good Name” technique. With the assistance of pleasant words and having, something positive (person, place or product) to be associated with one’s name prompt propagandists and advertisers to appeal to their audiences by leading them to believe that there are benefits attached to what these manipulators are trying to sell. This is a reason why many Christians will hesitate leaving dead, radical or traditional churches, because everyone can identify with the church and something beneficial; like for instance, it may have the largest congregation around or the best singing choir. Words commonly used to induce the desirability of being associated with what advertisers are offering are, progressive, broad-minded, sophisticated and liberal. Also, the Appeal of Good Names technique is used to cover up and/or justify multitude of sins by using words like “sexually active” to replace “ immorality” and “shortcomings” when one neglects his duties (Philip, 014, p.3). “Appeal to Human Authority” technique in a nutshell denotes that a respected person’s fame or notoriety is transferred to a product or belief to convince their audience that the respected person supports, endorses or uses a particular product (Philip, 014, pp. 3-4). It is inconceivable for some Christians who think that they have arrived in society to buy off the department store racks, because they have heard that their favorite television evangelists have their suits custom made or their pastors, ministers and/or the church “elites” shop at a particular store, in a particular district, compelling them to shop there too. “Appeal to Persuasion by Individuals” technique echoes the Appeal to Human Authority technique, except for a testimonial is usually used. People tell convincing stories to how they found a solution to a possible problem. The audience identifies with the individual and suddenly is convinced to buy into what they are selling (Philip, 014, p. 4). As an example, just before offering time during church services, some prosperity preaching ministries will encourage members of the congregation to stand before the church to share their testimonial of good fortune delivered by the hand of God to motivate the congregation to give more. If you have ever experienced this, were you not motivated to give more, and if you did not have anything to give you felt guilt, shame, or even defeat? Just imagine what the world is doing. It is using convincing individuals to share how much happier, more satisfied or wealthier they have become after they have purchased, used or participated in what they are selling. Note: not all Christian churches that teach prosperity messages have iniquitous intentions when they permit such testimonials, for the Bible declares that we are overcome by the words of our testimony. However, some ministries prey on Believers in this manner; so beware. The “Appeal to Tricky Implications” is a technique that takes a true statement and adds false implications, creating half-truths and little white lies. This technique is successfully used to discredit the Bible. Heretics will use a harmless statement that is true and twist it using negative implications and distorted connotations (Philip, 014, pp. 4-5). Other religions are notorious for this technique. Jehovah’s Witnesses, which really should not classify as a religion, but rather a cult, uses Scriptures and false doctrine to create lie-offerings to proselytes. The next technique tries to pursue its audience to believe that everyone else is doing what they are presenting except you, and that you must jump on the bandwagon. This method called the “Mob-Mentality Trick,” inducing people to buy that, which they do not need, support that which they do not believe and begin doing things they should not do. Many are unable to resist the pressure because of insecurity of not being like everyone else (Philip, 014, p.5). Barriers And Boundaries “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (2nd Corinthians 4:4) Barriers can be produced in an individual’s mind through repetition and reinforcement. Unlike ordinary barriers you can see daily, like fences and walls, mental barriers are not visible nor are they physical. However, evidence of their existence observed when barriers are not broken and boundaries are not crossed. Mental barriers are entrenched in the minds of those who receive instructions to where boundaries should be set. For the Christian, boundaries are created through the Scriptures. New Christians are given godly instructions from their parents, spiritual parents or from the reading of the Bible themselves. Fellow Christians, Bible Studies and other spiritual-growth experiences, usually reinforces these barriers. Because of these barriers being invisible in nature and under the Christian’s will, these barriers are quite vulnerable to mind manipulation. It is up to the Christian to surround himself with other Believers and study the Bible on a regular basis to prevent the weakening of instilled barriers (Philip, 015, pp. 4-5). The Bible declares in Proverbs 22:6, that if parents (and others) “Train up a child in the way he should go: when he is old, he will not depart from it.” But without reinforcement, that training will surely depart from him, especially when exposed to manipulating forces that desire to gain control over the Christian’s thoughts, ergo his mind. The Apostle Paul writes, “This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God…” (Ephesians 4:17-18, NKJV). Adhering to these barriers are the will of the Christian’s mind. Others may dictate the boundaries, but it is up to the individual to stay within them. For example, as children, we must have heard the words “no” a million times; “don’t touch!” a half-million times and “be careful!” a quarter-of-million times. Although we could not see, the actual consequences unless we were or someone we knew were disobedient; for the most part, we obeyed those invisible barriers. On the other hand, for those daredevils who crossed the invisible barriers they received severe burns from the stove, permanent scaring from mishandling scissors and a list of broken bones, stitches and “I’m sorry (ies)” that will last a life time. God is powerful enough to force us to stay within our boundaries, but He has given us intellect, emotions and a freewill. In other words, His permissive will says that we can do whatever we choose to do. Nevertheless, there will always be negative consequences when we cross boundaries. We make the decision to do good or follow evil. Reinforced positive barriers keep the Christian protected from external forces with manipulation on their minds (Philip, 015, p. 4). The Bible instructs Believers to guard their hearts with all diligence, meaning to protect their thoughts by feeding it godly information and by the avoidance of dwelling on sinful things (Proverbs 4:23). Remember, “as a man thinketh, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). A person will become what he thinks about all day long. Philippians 4:4 explains that if Believers communicate with God through prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will [also] guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” The reason why your thoughts must be guarded is that this is the ultimate place where the boundaries are observed. Even though human thoughts are invisible and are not physical, thoughts (the mind) can still be manipulated through human senses. Since the world has chimed into this knowledge, it has become very crafty in gaining mind control. Satan uses many vessels to saturate the minds of Christians with deviant philosophies that seem helpful even though they know that they are not true. This subtle attack has been used thousands of years and still going strong through rationalist, atheists, theological radicals and others (Philip, 015, pp. 1-2, 6). Lets examine six (6) basic principles used which mental barriers can be manipulated, given by Johnson C. Philips (015) in another book entitled Analysis of Mind Manipulation. Results of mind control are revealed differently in people. Some are affected gradually and others are affected immediately. By learning the six mental barriers and by being exposed to some of these techniques can prepare a Believer or even alert them to the use of mind control. Manipulation can be done by “Blinding.” We understand that mental barriers assist in keeping people from crossing boundaries. Continuous directives and instructions remind Christians to stay on the correct side of the barriers. However, the enemy can creep into a Believer’s thoughts with lies, biases and one-sided reports to dim his perception so that s/he may become blinded to the truth. Also overpowering false statements such as “an embryo is not a living person…the surgical process is like that unto the removal of tonsils” is stated when trying to gain support of abortion (p. 8). Then there is Emotion-induced blindness where Christians become so caught up in their emotions (bitterness, anger, malice, hatred and a gamut of many more) that they are blinded by the power of that particular emotion(s). Once a person is blinded, s/he very quickly forgets the boundaries and crosses over into error (Philip, 015, pp. 7-8). “Imprinting” is another principle that is used to manipulate. If an idea is imprinted in the mind as desirable or as proper, then the mental boundaries automatically accept this to be right. In counseling a young woman in college, she knew that smoking crack was wrong and that it was a powerful drug that destroys, but she chose to smoke it anyway: why? Because at her home everyone smoked crack, including her parents. The facts were that she knew engaging in smoking an illegal substance was against the law. However, at home, this was a pleasurable family activity, within their boundaries. This situation permeated repetitious imprinting. Legally, physically and mentally, this young woman knew the boundaries but crossed them because of manipulative imprinting. Every time she went home, no matter how much she dreaded it, she would indulge. A Christian teen shared in a counseling session that she had sexual relations with other girls, because of the imprinting that was produced through shock. Shock is another way of imprinting an idea in the minds of humans. The teen knew that this was inappropriate behavior, but her continuous participation made it bearable and then eventually enjoyable. This teenage girl had not only been exposed to sexual immorality, but to drugs and other rebellious things. Fantasy-creation is another way of imprinting that affects many Christians. People in general, fantasize about sex, money, fame and power everyday. The more they dwell on these things, the more likely their thoughts will push godliness out (this weakens the boundaries) and allow sinful desires to come in. Remember when Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that if you lust after anyone, that you have already committed adultery with them in your heart (mind)? Pornography, crude conversations and dirty jokes, all leave imprints of fantasy-creation on Believers’ minds through their eye, ear and mouth-gates. The final imprinting is emotional manipulation by bypassing reason. Ordinarily the human mind analyzes information received and by using reason then will it take action. Consequently, emotions push out reasoning, when emotions should play a small part in the process (Philip, 015, pp. 8-10). “Desensitization” is used to manipulate many minds in small doses. This principle used to manipulate is so undetectable, so commonly used that I devoted an entire chapter to it. (See Chapter 5) Christians tremble at the thought of participating in any scandalous activities, because they were trained to avoid or remove themselves from such situations. However, after the initial shock and the repetition of such exposures the shock gradually is removed, then they become desensitized to the evil to the point of overlooking it, then tolerating it, then condoning it, liking it, desiring it, justifying it until they begin to indulge in it. This method is also called “Mike’s Law.” According to “Mike’s Law” the more the individual indulges in forbidden activities, the more s/he will desire increased doses of the activities (pp. 10-11). Left up to human desires there would be no boundaries, this is where the manipulation through “Expansion” come into play. If a Christian is able to control his desires, then it is least likely for him to be tempted to break his mental barriers. Nevertheless, the three-fold enemy (the world, the flesh and the devil) of every Christian is very much eager to attack the Believer through the expanding of the needs, desires and expectations of the Christian, by mentally motivating him to desire forbidden things. Fantasies know no boundaries. Craving pleasurable and luxurious things lead to sinful behavior. Where as desiring the essentials keeps a Christian in balance. Not to say that Christians should not have expensive things, but balance holds an individual within the confines of his boundaries. On the other hand, contrived desire-creation and lust-creation methods can destroy balance by creating desire and lust for luxury and pleasure in a Christian’s heart (pp.11-12). “Fear-Creation” is a paralyzing manipulation that affects mental alertness, attitudes of combat and self-defense against evil. Once there is fear in the heart an individual fails to take immediate action. Eventually, the fearful person will either flee or compromise (p.12). Years ago my husband who passed away in 1998, shared a story of traveling on the subway in New York City as a teen. While he was heading home one day, a young man pulled out a gun and threaten to shoot him if he did not hand over his money. My husband spoke of being paralyzed with fear; he could do nothing but comply. He felt helpless. Although he knew he was bigger and stronger than the robber was, my husband still surrendered his wallet without a fight. In fact, I am certain my husband did not think about fighting him, but rather to flee from that situation as quickly as possible even if it meant giving up his wallet. Intimidation stemmed also from fear-creation, from family, friends, coworkers and/or society can feel almost as paralyzing as being held up at gunpoint. Intimidation of this type is explained as either Peer or Social Pressures. Perhaps these types of pressures are the worst of fear-creation because they do not so easily go away (pp. 12-13). They are difficult to flee from because they are everywhere you go. There are the pressures of your parents wanting you to be a doctor or a lawyer, when you are satisfied with expressing yourself through painting. Then at school there are the peer pressures of listening to the right music, hanging with the right crowd and wearing the right clothing. Societal pressures dictate when we should get married, how many children we should have and who should get divorced. The final method of manipulation is through “Value Shifting.” Shifting in the mental and moral barriers changes the values, and the shifting in the values changes the barriers. That means, whatever you have deemed to be important or right, if there is a shifting of the mental and moral barriers there will also be a change in your values, so what use to be important and right are no longer acceptable (pp.13-14). The present opposition of homosexuality is a perfect example. The Bible clearly speaks against such a lifestyle; in fact, it is abominable. However, to speak openly against such immoral behavior can land you in jail in some countries, including the United States. In an article entitled Pastor In Prison, cited from the Pastor Rod Parsley, Center for Moral Clarity Website, Ake Green, pastor of a Pentecostal church in Kalmar, Sweden was sentenced to one month in prison for preaching against sexual immorality according to Romans 1:24-27. Prosecutors claim that Pastor Green’s sermon was a “hate speech against homosexuals” (Parsley, 2004). Clearly any hateful behavior towards anyone is wrong, for the Bible tells use to love even our enemies. But the Bible also instructs us to preach and teach the truth, with warnings of such value shifting found in Romans 1:25 “who changed the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator…” A similar law has been passed through the state assembly in California. Doubt Creation is a tool that assists in shifting moral and mental barriers. Once a doubt is released into the minds of those who esteemed something greatly, it is planted in their hearts and the respect disappears. “Subversion” is also used as a tool of shifting values. Subversion is the removal of a key component in a value that has been instilled in a Christian by his parents and/or the Bible over years. Once a part is taken away, the entire process can unravel (Philip, 015, pp.13-14).
